OAKLAND, CA, UNITED STATES, September 15, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- California Waste Solutions returned as a Diamond Sponsor of the 2026 San José Police Department Major Awards Ceremony, continuing a relationship with the San José Police Foundation that began in 2021.

The annual ceremony recognizes members of the San José Police Department and community members whose actions demonstrate exceptional service, courage and commitment to public safety. Approximately 650 people attended this year’s ceremony, including law enforcement personnel, business leaders, elected officials, city representatives and community members.

The San José Police Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has operated since 2006. It raises private support for programs and needs that fall outside the city’s annual budget, including the Major Awards Ceremony, academy education, scholarships for children of department personnel, support for the department’s K9 unit and funding for urgent needs that may not otherwise be covered through the regular budget process.

“This is one evening where the city says out loud what these officers and residents did during the year,” said David Duong, founder and chief executive officer of California Waste Solutions. “We have been part of it since 2021. Showing up once is a gesture. Showing up every year is a relationship.”

A relationship built over time
California Waste Solutions’ involvement with the foundation now extends beyond event sponsorship. Michael Duong, president of California Waste Solutions, serves on the San José Police Foundation’s board of directors, adding an ongoing leadership role to the company’s financial support.

That continuity is important to the way CWS approaches community partnerships. Rather than treating civic involvement as a one-time contribution, the company has focused on relationships that can be maintained over time and connected to the communities where its employees work and its customers live.
For a company whose collection crews, customer-service teams and operations employees are present in San José neighborhoods every week, public safety is closely tied to day-to-day service. The company’s support for the foundation reflects the same long-term approach it brings to municipal recycling: consistency, accountability and a willingness to remain engaged after the initial commitment is made.

Community safety as a standing priority
Support for public safety is one part of California Waste Solutions’ broader community work. In 2022, David Duong and the Oakland Chinatown Improvement Council provided an $80,000 grant that helped the Oakland Police Department establish an aerial-support capability, adding another resource for public-safety operations.

“Our crews are in San José neighborhoods every week, so the safety of this city is not an abstract question for us,” said Michael Duong, president of California Waste Solutions. “It affects our employees, our customers and every household on the route. Supporting the people who protect this community is part of how we take responsibility for the place we work.”

Service, environmental responsibility and community
California Waste Solutions has operated in the Bay Area for more than three decades, with recycling collection, material recovery, processing and customer service at the center of its work. Over that time, the company’s role in the communities it serves has grown beyond the collection route.

CWS has built its operating philosophy around a small set of practical values: dependable service, environmental responsibility, safety, continuous improvement and long-term partnership. Those values are visible in the company’s investment in recycling infrastructure and technology, but they also shape how CWS approaches its relationships with cities, community organizations and residents.

In San José, that means being accountable not only for collecting and processing recyclable material, but also for being present in the community that depends on those services. CWS sees strong municipal partnerships, responsive customer service and community participation as connected parts of the same responsibility.

The company has also emphasized education and engagement as part of its environmental work. Recycling programs are most effective when residents understand how to participate, when customers can reach someone for help and when service providers remain responsive to changing community needs. That emphasis on communication and participation is part of the same broader commitment CWS brings to civic partnerships such as the San José Police Foundation.

Returning to the Major Awards Ceremony year after year therefore carries meaning beyond the sponsorship itself. It reflects a company that has chosen to stay involved in the cities where it operates and to support institutions that contribute to the safety, stability and quality of life of those communities.
